Layout rules
Board ends must not butt directly together. Place joints at a perpendicular breaker board, with each board end supported. Picture-frame corners are shown with 45° mitres; use double joists or equivalent support where border boards meet the field at right angles. Check the selected board manufacturer's instructions.

Frame and breaker-board supportBoard ends stop at a divider or border board; they do not butt directly together. Add subframe blocking beneath each breaker board. Use double joists or equivalent support where picture-frame boards meet the field at right angles. Where dimensions allow, plan around full stock lengths or 1.8 m / 2.7 m cuts to use 5.4 m stock efficiently; avoid random staggered butt joints.

The deck's outside corner stays square. Both perpendicular frame boards are mitred so the diagonal joint runs from the outside point to the inside corner.

SubstructureIndependent, stable support required

Expansion gaps depend on board length, installation temperature, sun exposure and site conditions. This is a material and layout concept; verify the selected board manufacturer's installation guide and the site structure before building. Do not fix composite decking directly to a solid surface such as concrete.
